King Noodle House: Oodles of Hand-Pulled Noodle Perfection

I recall sitting at King Noodle House pre-pandemic and thinking about how their chicken chow mein is the best I’d ever had. They make their own hand-pulled noodles and the chicken is moist and perfect. Some chow mein is slightly greasy. King Noodle’s is not.

Today I decided to try something new. I’m not always a fan of soup because if you don’t like one ingredient you can’t push it to the side of the plate. So I was happy to find a noodles combo on the menu. 

You can pick from a long list of noodle types and there are four soup base options to pick from including vegetable broth and Szechuan spicy soup which sounds amazing. You get your pick of two free vegetables and two free toppings which are protein. You can pay for additional vegetables and toppings. I ordered online and there isn’t an option to order say mushroom for two of your vegetables, so if you want to really customize your soup, it is probably best to do a phone order or go into the restaurant. I also ordered chicken chow mein for my son. And because I wanted some too.

The broth for my soup came in a separate container from the noodles, veggies and protein. This worked great because I only dished up half of it so I could “leave room” for chicken chow mein. The broth can be reheated separately later so it doesn’t degrade the noodle texture. 

I assembled my soup in my beautiful Mountain Ridge Pottery rice bowl that I use for everything from cereal to ice cream to noodles. I found it last year at the Everett Farmers Market. Everyone in my family wanted their own bowl so now we have three.

Back to the food. I selected hand-pulled noodles because I think they are perfection and chicken broth which had full, clean flavors of chicken as I expected. I opted for mushrooms and baby bok choy for my vegetables and wonton and sliced chicken for my protein. I was very satisfied that I ventured out and tried something new. It tasted great and half a serving was filling. The only thing I didn’t like was the sliced chicken which was overcooked and dry. 

I had a few bites of the chicken chow mein and it was everything I remembered. It’s a very different chow mein from other places. I think flour from the hand-pulled noodles thicken the sauce and soaks up any oil. The dish might taste different with a different type of noodle, but after having King Noodles hand-pulled noodles there’s no going back so I guess I won’t know.
