Oshima Sushi: Roll On in for More Than Just Sushi

Oshima Sushi is one of my favorite restaurants. But I don’t like sushi. I’ve wanted to do a story on them for some time but I’m obviously not the best person to ask where to go to get sushi. I recently asked my Westmont-Holly Neighbors Facebook group where they liked to eat in the neighborhood and Oshima came up multiple times. I asked what everyone likes to eat there and it turns out that they go for the non-sushi offerings too.  

So sushi-lovers before you close the tab, I can tell you that I took my cousin there once. She loves sushi and has eaten the best sushi, from its homeland of Japan. She was pleased with Oshima Sushi. 

Oshima is a smallish restaurant with beautiful decor. The lighting is soft and a captivating mural fills one wall of the restaurant. Service has been nothing but gracious over the years I’ve been going. If you dine in, make sure to order the green tea. I’m told that they add rice flour which makes it especially delicious. 

Located two doors down from one of the best donut spots in the city, Tyler’s Donuts, it’s on the busy corner of 112th and Evergreen Way. I stopped in recently to pick up dinner for my family. I ordered some of our favorites and a couple of recommendations from my neighbors.

I usually order a crazy tempura roll. It was a neighbor’s favorite too. It plus a couple of cups of tea is always enough to fill me up. Even though I was trying some new things, I ordered the crazy tempura so you could see how spectacular it looks. It comes drizzled with 3 sauces. One is a spicy mayo, the other a hoisin and I’m not sure what the other is. It alone has a little kick, but make sure to add wasabi to your soy sauce too. If you’re looking for it on the menu it’s under regular rolls, but I think it should be under special rolls because it is indeed special.

Chicken katsu was recommended by another neighbor so we gave it a try. There was a tiny salad on the side that looked crisp and refreshing, but no one bothered to eat it because there were too many other things to taste. The salad came with what looked and tasted like a housemade dressing so I’ll keep that in mind for next time. 

The chicken was pounded thin and breaded with panko. It was excellent. It came on a bed of rice and miso soup that kind of paled in comparison to all the other yummy things we were eating.

Next up was the ramen and California roll combo. My son called dibs on the roll because it is his favorite. The ramen came unassembled with the broth in one container and noodles and toppings in the other. I poured it all in a bowl which was a mistake because there was far too much nori for my family’s taste. I heard a lot of “it’s good, but a little fishy”.

The fishiness certainly could have been controlled because the nori was on top of all the fixings and I could have left it entirely out. Lesson learned. The rest of the fixings had a little of everything including a slice of pork, fish cakes, corn kernels and a bunch of rehydrated mushrooms.

The last thing we ordered was gyoza, because we always order a side gyoza. Yum.
