Sneak Peek at Artisan PNW’s New Location in Historic Hodge’s Building

I can barely contain my excitement about something special happening on Hewitt in downtown Everett. Artisan PNW, formerly Artisans Mercantile, is coming to town and they are tirelessly working to get their new location in Hodge’s Building ready to open.

Hodge’s Building you may recall almost met its fate with a wrecking ball to make room for a new county courthouse back in 2015. The building was condemned at the time after there had been a fatality in an apartment fire a couple years prior. Plans were nixed for a new courthouse and Hodge’s Building is now rising from the ashes, of which there were few because of the solid 2 x 6 construction of the floors and walls.

The building was built in 1923 and needs a lot of work to bring it up to code, just ask Artisan PNW owners Judi and Emma Kate Ramsey. They had hoped to open their shop back in November, but they haven’t let the extensive water damage and outdated electrical wiring dampen their enthusiasm.

In July 2021, they learned that their lease of 5 years in downtown Snohomish wasn’t going to be renewed so they set out looking for a location in Everett. Judi loves Everett. Even if she didn’t tell me directly, I can tell by all of her goals for the new location.

The mother and daughter team wants to create a space where everyone feels welcome and comfortable, especially underserved communities. They are thinking of ways they can help our homeless neighbors such as having donated cold weather clothing on hand for those in need. They are also mentoring their artist vendors to make sure they are asking a fair price for their labor and talent.

Hodge’s Building has three entrances on Hewitt. They will have a new and used book store and a coffee shop in the east entrance and their retail boutique at the west entrance. The center entrance goes to the apartments above that are also being renovated and brought up to code.

There will be space for Emma Kate to have a print studio. She studied print design in college and access to equipment in Everett is limited. They will host classes and offer studio memberships. Artists are painting tables for the coffee shop and Emma Kate has painted a stunning mural with the shop's logo. There will be an Art-o-Mat Machine for purchasing small pieces of art that fit into a refurbished, upcycled cigarette machine.

Judi and Emma Kate are lovely and fun and their coffee shop and store is going to be beautiful, inviting and comfortable. I am so looking forward to Artisans PNW grand opening, hopefully in January.

Though Artisans PNW won’t be open until after the holiday, you can still shop online and pick up your purchase at the store, and maybe even get your own sneak peek at the marvelous space.
