Worth Leaving Town For: Spoon & Straw Acai Bowls and Espresso

There’s only two places I know of to get acai bowls, Maui Hawaii and Marysville Washington.

I first stumbled upon acai bowls on my honeymoon in Hawaii back in 2013, and I was instantly in love. So when I heard about Spoon & Straw Acai Bowls and Espresso in Marysville, I knew I had to check it out. 

The first thing you’ll notice about Spoon & Straw is its size. It’s tiny.

There’s pretty much only enough room for one party to stand inside while ordering, so don’t be too discouraged if there’s a line out the door.

Something tells me there is almost always a line out the door.

On the Tuesday afternoon I popped by, the owner, Angela, apologized for the wait in between roars from the screeching blender. I knew the wait would be more than worth it as I perused the simple but delicious-looking menu.

A bowl runs $12. Choose between acai or pitaya (dragon fruit) for your base and pick four toppings. I stuck with acai, and opted for blueberries, raspberries, bannana and granola for my toppings. 

Angela said they usually, “drizzle some honey on top, if that’s okay?”

“Yes please!”, I exclaimed.

Angela and I continued to chat while her and her teammate stumbled over one another working away. They’d had a steady stream of customers all day since opening earlier that morning. “Lots of new customers today,” Angela shared.

I was curious what her inspiration was to open the business. “Where’d the idea come from?” I asked.

It turns out Angela had been in a very bad accident that resulted in a brain injury. She had to relearn how to do a lot of things. It was a difficult process itself, not to mention she had four kids to take care of. During her recovery she lost her house.

“It ended up being a good thing that I sold the house,” Angela shared. While she was working on her recovery and working out at Crossfit in Marysville, she noticed the small building across the street was available.

Angela already knew the owners of the property, and she had been to Hawaii enough times to already have fallen in love with acai. While she was already relearning to do so much through her recovery, she thought starting a business she could run with her family would be a great fit. She pitched the owners of the building on her dream, and Spoon and Straw was born.

I’m not surprised Angela’s dream was to bring acai bowls to Snohomish County. My bowl tasted just like that- dreamy.

The flavors blended perfectly. Everything was super fresh and perfectly ripe. I really loved the contrast of the granola. It was so. freaking. delicious.

Acai itself is basically like the healthy version of a slurpee. Which means you’ll need to resist gobbling it down too quickly, or you will definitely get a brain freeze. My wife learned this the hard way.

]I also got a vanilla latte with almond milk, which was also good. But let’s face it, the real star here was the acai bowl. That’s why I won't hesitate to go again and deal with the ‘line out the door’. 

Even though Spoon & Straw may require a little patience, it’s quicker than a trip to Hawaii, but just as delicious. Because that’s how good dreams taste. Delicious. 

And that’s why Marysville’s Spoon & Straw just might be worth leaving town for.
