Back to School Budget Hacks for Awesome Everett Parents

I see you there, hard-working parents. It’s late summertime and the novelty of “vacation” has worn off. Your kids are pouring liquid candle wax down your bathroom drain, wrestling during your Zoom calls, and “trying to cook” on the stove before you’ve had that first sip of morning coffee.

We all know that modern parenting comes with its fair share of challenges. Let’s make it a little less challenging. As the summer days start to wind down, fall creeps in, and that means one thing: it's time to gear up for the school year without draining your bank account.

Don't worry, we've got your back with these five (local!) budget hacks that will help you navigate the back-to-school frenzy with a smile. So you can get back to that morning coffee... and get some rest.

1. Raid the closet treasure trove

There’s nothing wrong with buying brand new back-to-school outfits, but before you do, ask yourself: is that really necessary?

Before you even hit the stores, take a dive into the depths of your kid's dresser and closet. Or even better, do all your laundry. You'll find slightly-worn jeans, hoodies, and still-hip backpacks. It's like shopping without spending a dime. As my grandma said: use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

2. Sundays at St. Vincent de Paul

This is the single best hack I know. I’m almost hesitant to share it here because it’s that good. All clothing is $1.25 on Sundays at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store on Broadway. It’s such a good deal that when I heard about it, I didn’t believe it. But now I regularly buy basics for my kids there. Less than $20 can get your kiddo a full bag of clothes.

3. Free backpacks, free lunch, sack lunch

Some schools in the Everett School District offer free breakfast and lunch and backpacks to all students. Check with your school’s front desk to see which, if any, resources are available.

If you do need to pay for school lunch, you can always pack lunches for your kid. Classic parent move. It comes with the territory. Lunch-packing requires a little more time and effort, but you’ll send them off to school knowing that they’re eating well and you’re saving money.

4. Coupon hard and bargain hunt

Then there are those have-to-have school supplies. The quality colored pencils for young Picasso. Durable cleats for soccer practice. For these big-ticket items, check for coupons, online deals, or outlet mall savings. Sometimes, just asking a clerk if there are any in-store coupons can save you big bucks.

The internet is also a treasure trove of back-to-school deals waiting to be uncovered. Look for discounts, coupon codes, and special promotions. You'll be amazed at the savings you can score with just a few clicks.

5. Check with your home room teacher

Before you buy anything, check with your homeroom teacher. School supply needs can vary widely from classroom to classroom -- and needed supplies aren’t necessarily what you might think. Some classes need snacks, boxes of Kleenex, or hand sanitizer. Win rapport with your homeroom teacher by checking in on their actual, requested school supplies before hitting the store.

So there you have it, parents! With these five budget hacks up your sleeve, you're all set to conquer the back-to-school season like a pro. Remember, it's not about spending big money; it's about smart choices and making the most of what you have. You've got this!

*Salutes with morning coffee*
