Seafood with a Side of Antiques: Andy's Fish House

One of the best parts of living in Everett is that it’s close to so many other fun places to explore. Places that people come from all over the state - and further - to visit. Places like our very own city of Snohomish, that features shops offering a little bit of heaven for antique lovers.

I've been known to stroll the antique stores of Snohomish, though, these days, I like some of the gift and clothing stores a little bit more. But not being much of a shopper of anything anymore, and being a foodie at heart, what I personally like the most in Snohomish is the variety of dining choices. So, when a girlfriend called and suggested meeting at Andy's Fish House for lunch I was there.

I've eaten at Andys numerous times and always found the food to be fresh which is super important when what you feature is seafood. Andy's has salads, pasta dishes, a clam chowder to rival Ivars, po boy sandwiches and traditional dishes like fish n chips. Not so traditionally, however, you can get your fish n chips with cod, halibut or salmon.

When I dine at Andy's I tend to get the crab and shrimp Louie with their homemade thousand islands dressing. They use garden greens versus romaine or iceberg lettuce and add in some fresh veggies though I have them hold the raw mushrooms on it. I love mushrooms cooked but, for me, they don't belong raw on a Louie.

This trip I decided to change things up. Smoked salmon chowder was on the specials list so we each started with a cup of that. It was rich with flavors of dill and chunks of carrots, potatoes and, of course, smoked salmon. We both gave it a hearty thumbs up. Keeping with the changing things up, I skipped the Louie and went for a half avocado with shrimp. Lucky me! The avocado was perfectly ripe, the shrimp abundant and fresh, and it was all put together with that same homemade thousand islands dressing.

My girlfriend went for halibut taquitos, another special that day, and she was pleased as well. They were so inviting on the plate. They had some crunch to them, fresh halibut and a spiciness that she pronounced just right.

At a follow-up lunch, the next week, with different dining friends, I had the roasted beet salad that was as pretty to look at as it was delicious to eat. I am a fan of their use of fresh produce from farms in the area. Also, Andy's offers wine and enough variety of beers that it took my dining companions more than a few minutes to make their selection.

On the challenging side, Andy's has limited inside dining and because of some kind of official City of Snohomish reason, they recently had to remove the tent around their outdoor dining. I worry for them in the colder weather with such reduced capacity but it sounds like they have plans to make it all work so they should fly through our generally moderate winter weather easily.

I know when we get hungry for seafood, most of us in this county by beautiful Port Gardner Bay, naturally think about heading to the wide selection of choices at the waterfront. But, if you are looking for fresh seafood with a nice drive, and the possibility of discovering something vintage for your living room or brand new to hang in your closet, then you really need to add Andys Fish House to your list of choices. Oh, and a bonus! Andy himself is often there, smiling and friendly, adding to the mix of a nice meal out.
