Oh My Goddess: the Village Theatre's "String"

Greek mythology says that Greek gods are crazy creatures, and while I’m no history buff, I do know that the Village Theatre’s newest show “String” is one crazy good show.

In the Village’s latest installment, three greek mythological creatures known as the Fates get on Zeus’s bad side and are thrust from the heavenly realms doomed to live life on Earth with all us “specks.” As with any family drama, the trio of sisters born from the Night end up getting themselves in somewhat of a pickle involving magical scissors and a building security guard.

I will admit, the story line of this show is incredibly predictable. You know exactly what will happen as soon as one of the sister’s lets her guard down and falls in love. Aside from this foreseeable plot, each musical number has real lyrics with tangible concepts the audience can relate with. Almost hearkening back to the good ol’ days of musicals like “Rent” and “Les Miserables.”

Pair interesting lyrics with fantastic vocalists, and you’ve almost got an award winning show waiting to happen. Each soloist will make you turn slightly green with jealousy over the fact that your showerhead performances will never come close to their pipes. Especially O’Brien the security guard, played by actor Nathaniel Tenenbaum. I could watch a whole show with his sassy singing.

Instead of building full-paneled set pieces, each scene is ushered in with a variety of different lighting cues that transform the stage. Their usage of mundane office fluorescent lamps and bare-bones elevator boxes lit from the inside allows your imagination to visualize the massive office building the majority of the show takes place in.

Here’s what’s novel about this show. Besides its first performance at the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre in Issaquah in March, this is the first time “String” has been performed on a live stage, ever. Yup, this is the world premier of a brand new show.
