ANSWERS
1. Groot - Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Comics
Groot is an alien but he's also a plant (technically he's a Flora colossus from Planet X. Duh.). He's part of the Chris Pratt-led superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy.
2. Bat-Girl - DC Comics
In early comics she was the love interest of Batman's sidekick, Robin. So, yeah. Robin was in love with the younger, female version of his father-figure employer. Seems awfully Freudian. Funko has a thing for the Batman Family: many of their oversized statues are bat-related.
3. The Grape Ape - The Great Grape Ape Show, Hanna-Barbera
The Great Grape Ape Show was a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon featuring a 40-foot tall gorilla. The Grape Ape was a well-meaning simple-minded guy, but his size intimidated people he met. That was pretty much the premise of the show.
4. Harry Potter - Harry Potter
Easy. He's a boy wizard who lives under the stairs in a traumatic CPS situation until... his destiny is revealed...
5. Freddy Funko
He's the Funko mascot, first released in 2012. He looks like a retro kid because that's the whole point: Funko does popular culture nostalgia like no other.
6. Hulk - Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel Comics
This is the Hulk wearing galactic gladiator getup. Some context: in Thor: Ragnarok, the superhero/god is held captive on the planet Sakaar, where he must beat the Hulk in a gladiator-esque duel to safely return to Asgard. So that explains the armor.
7. James P. "Sully" Sullivan - Monsters, Inc.
Lovable monster with a heart of gold, as voiced by John Goodman. He hangs out in an apartment with a cyclops who talks a lot like Billy Crystal.
8. Maleficent - Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent
Originally she was a no-good fairy and the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil" in Sleeping Beauty. Then there was a postmodern retake on her life in 2014, featuring Angelina Jolie. Is Maleficent truly bad-bad or merely tragic and misunderstood?
9. Chewbacca - Star Wars
Almost too easy.
Just remember, folks: always let the Wookie win.
