After an unfortunate incident with a vintage slow cooker, Selena Blachford found herself needing to replace a scorched countertop. Thanks to her neighbor April Peterson, she already knew what to do next. "I've lived in the house for 24 years," Selena explained, "We had the house built, so I had a part in how the kitchen looked initially. My desire was to not do a major change, but just to update what I already had." From them pulling up and coming in to packing up and driving away, it was 5 ½ hours." That included placing a new undermount sink she chose to match the sharp new look.
The dust and disruption were minimal and Selena was able to have a normal workday in her office down the hall, which she was thrilled about. "I had some neighbors who had their kitchen redone. They moved out of their house, for two months!"

After using an unsealed slab of granite as a temporary counter before the installation, she quickly came to appreciate how easy the new surface is to clean. While she was able to take advantage of a friends and family discount, Selena says she'd have done the update even without it. She didn't spend less, it ended up being a way to get a backsplash at no extra cost.
