Getting out of the house after a year of pandemic hiding can be a struggle. Fears of crowded rooms and rusty social skills are no joke. However, after dropping by The Milk House (just off Evergreen Way, behind Totem Family Diner), I think I may just have found the perfect way for all of us locals to baby step back into public life.

Heather and Mike Wallace have built an airy, comfortable, and super welcoming landing spot for all their Everett friends. And that means you—even if you’ve never laid eyes on the two of them before. Although they appreciate the beauty (and necessity) of a good cup of coffee and snack, their overarching gift to Everett may lay in their commitment to creating a comfortable spot for the community to come together and chat. The location is convenient, on the way when you’re to-ing and fro-ing from any number of spots, and the local-made and roasted treats are worth going a few blocks out of the way.

Delicious and local carry even weight at the Milk House. They’ve partnered with local artisans and procured goods to keep everything firmly rooted in the Everett community. The coffee is roasted locally by Velton’s Coffee, the tea is stocked by Rabbit’s Pantry, the divine bagels come from Whidbey Island Bakery (both Heather and Mike grew up on Whidbey Island), and the fab baked goods are whipped up by Lil Baker – who used to own Pave Bakery.

I happened to be sitting around one day while Mike was interviewing potential baristas and overheard a little bit of his spiel – “The most important thing is to make everyone feel welcome.” At the Milk House, good coffee, delicious food, and a cozy atmosphere are standard when you push open the door.
