Hewitt Burger Run 2016
So what do three fellas in their 30’s have to do on a Tuesday evening that could possibly be
more important than The First Annual Hewitt Burger Run? Nothing, absolutely nothing.
You see my friends, right now there is an Evvy Award up for grabs for the best burger in Everett. And we thought, “What if we ate four burgers at four different places all within walking distance in Downtown Everett and then compared them in an epic Battle Royale Burger Style?” And, like any fool hardy group of gentlemen might, we did just that. Here is our tale of burgers, beer, and bellies.
The Anchor: The Picnic Burger $10
Our first stop of the night brought us to Everett’s iconic Anchor Pub. This was the perfect beginning to the night. This burger brought me back to summer barbecues when my dad would make the perfect burgers. The pub bun was perfectly toasted, rich and melty cheddar cheese, and all the fixins. And the patty itself? Juicy not greasy. Oozing flavors of garlic and pepper and was that oregano in there? Are you kidding me! Add that nice pile of thick hand-cut fries perfectly salted AND peppered and you’ve got me. You get all this for $10 which puts it high on price. But also high on flavor. So, you know.
The Soundview: The Late-Night Classic $7
There is just something about the Soundview. Maybe it’s the rich and all encompassing culture, maybe it’s that old dive bar charm, maybe it’s those drinks they pour so well and somehow so cheap. I can say this, when it’s late and I roll into The Soundview I can’t wait to get my hands on a cheeseburger and some tots. Now, we ate the $2 slider because it’s delicious and it was necessary (and it’s a classic at the end of any night of drinking). But for the purposes of this endeavor and to keep things equal and all, we also ate the Soundview cheeseburger. This one is just classic. Griddle cooked and covered in American cheese. It is simplicity at it’s finest. A touch of relish gives it some bite and we went for tots on the side for good measure. $7 for everything and you can add a tallboy of Olympia or Rainier and come out ahead of the Anchor. Not bad, not bad at all.
Tony V’s Garage: The Everett Deluxe $3
At this point we began to realize that this was no small undertaking we had embarked upon. But we couldn’t just let you down. So we moved onward and upward. Tony’s offers a $3 cheeseburger. That’s right, just three bucks. Add fries for three bucks more and you’ve got yourself a proper basket. The meat was delicious, high quality and well seasoned. It was greasy and saucy and covered in melty American cheese. Like a Dick’s Deluxe, but it’s only a couple blocks from my house. This is completely worth the $3 price tag. But, if that’s not enough for you then check this. On Tuesday nights, you can waltz in to Tony’s and you can order two cheeseburgers, two orders of fries, and two beers for $10. TEN DOLLARS! That’s all I have to say about that.
YNOT: The Fancy Pants $10
So these guys know how to present a burger. A huge juicy patty with an ample amount of
pepper jack cheese, bacon, and all the proper fixins served on a pretzel bun fit for a king. With fries or tots included this whole deal will run you $10. A solid showing for this little bar near Broadway. Yet, for all of it’s wonderful accoutrements I personally felt like they overplayed their hand. It’s not in any way a bad burger, (and on Tuesday night you can grab two of them for $10) but it just didn’t do it for me. To be fair, this was the fourth burger we had eaten in four hours. Take that as you will.
The Verdict:
The Anchor Burger was my favorite by far. Everything about the burger was exactly the way I
dig my burgers and the fries were top notch. Nothing came close to this one and you have to get yourself one. Right now. But, I can’t close this out without saying this. That Tony’s Burger for $3 is a can’t miss value and easily the best burger deal in Everett. Now, I’m not telling you how to live your life but you might want to get out there and try some burgers.
The deadline for the Evvy’s is coming up. We ate four of them for you but you all still need to hit up The New Mexicans, Sol, Mr. Z’s, Nick’s Jr., Woodfire, and Kama’aina Grindz to name just a few. So what are you waiting for? The Second Annual Hewitt Burger Run? I’ll see what I can do my friends. In the meantime, go eat!
