4 Reasons to Stop at Sub Shop # 26
I was beginning to think that I was the only person in Everett to never have eaten at Sub Shop #26 on 19th in north Everett. In all fairness, it is a 15-minute drive from my house so for take-out that's 30 minutes of driving. But I decided to check it out and I’m glad I did. Here’s why.
Friendly Service
I parked my car and as I walked toward the restaurant, I found owner Wai Eng standing outside enjoying the sunshine. He told me that he is taking a break and to just leave some money on the counter. He was joking of course and we headed into the shop that has a thrift store vibe, decorated with a jumble of art and artifacts. We made easy conversation while he made my order and Eng gave me a wafer cookie for each family member plus an extra one for me. He’s a really nice guy.
Solid Sandwiches
There’s nothing fancy about Sub Shop’s sandwiches. Cold cuts piled on a basic hoagie roll. Mayo, mustard, onion, lettuce, tomato. Vinegar and oil. Honestly, most of the time a basic sandwich will do just fine.
Great Prices
I got way more food for my money than I was expecting. The half sandwich is actually a full hoagie roll and a whole sandwich is 2 hoagie rolls. There are 11 sandwich options and I ordered a reuben which was just swiss, pastrami and sauerkraut. It didn’t have Russian dressing and wasn’t heated, but still satisfying. My son had ham and cheese and ate it all. He’s not big on fancy sandwiches so we’ll likely be stopping at Sub Shop #26 for that exact reason.
My husband wanted a hot sandwich, which are not on the menu, so Eng insisted that a Full Boat was what my husband would want. It had ALL the kinds of meats and cheeses on it. I ordered a full, which again is 2 hoagie rolls. Hubs was very pleased. Note if you plan to go that Sub Shop #26 is a cash-only business.
Longtime Local Institution
Sub Shop #26 is not part of a chain. It’s a single location that has been open for over 35 years. When we think about the life cycle of a small business, that is no small feat.
Even though Sub Shop #26 is out of the way for me to go to regularly, I can see it being a great stop to pick up food for a picnic at the waterfront or Legion Park.
