Alaska Weathervane Serves Perfect Scallops

Even though I’m a PNW girl born and bred, I didn’t eat much seafood growing up. My family would eat finned fish like salmon and halibut, plenty of shrimp, a little crab and lobster, and even fewer scallops. When I got older, I decided I needed to fix this, and I took a couple of shots at cooking scallops. I wasn’t the best cook in my early 20s, so needless to say; the scallops were far from appetizing.

So I started ordering them at restaurants and finding that I do, indeed, like scallops. But only when they’re cooked by someone who knows what the heck they’re doing.

Fast forward a bunch of years; while I have considerably expanded my skills in the kitchen, I have not tried to cook scallops since. I’d much rather someone else cook them for me.

Enter: Alaska Weathervane Scallop Truck.

Their basic black and white truck motif is eye-catching, and their simple menu is drool-inducing.

Pan-seared scallops served over your choice of rice pilaf or green chile grits, topped with an option of marsala mushroom sauce, creamy red curry, or basil pesto sauce.

Or, if you like handheld meals, they offer their trademark Scallorito® with pan-seared scallops, pesto mayo coleslaw, bacon, cilantro, and onions on flour tortillas. And for those who don’t want the tortillas, they also offer a Scallad. 

I have a weakness for mushrooms and rice, so I ordered the pan-seared scallops over rice pilaf topped with marsala mushroom sauce. I have one thing to say: Oh Emmmm Gee.

The nuttiness of the wild rice pilaf complimented the earthly mushroom marsala sauce. Tossed on top were lightly seared, tender, moist, perfect scallops. I very nearly licked my paper bowl clean. 

My friend ordered the Scalloritos® and immediately started groaning. I can only assume the groans indicated happiness since the Scalloritos® were gone very quickly. The pesto mayo coleslaw wasn’t too thick or heavy, and the bacon was a crispy strip that looked right at home nestled in among the perfect scallops. Have I mentioned the scallops were perfect? Well, they were perfect.

The side of the truck says “Fishermen Owned,” and I like that the fishermen who catch the scallops are also the same ones who own and operate the truck. Talk about knowing the source of your food.
