Worth Leaving Town For: Taqueria Puebla

Someone awesome gave me a $25 gift certificate for what I thought was a restaurant in Lynnwood. Turns out it was in Lynnwood but recently moved to Mukilteo. My Muk friends are pretty excited about it so I decided to check it out.

Taqueria Puebla recently opened in the old Taco Del Mar spot in the Harbour Pointe Shopping Center. The space still feels familiar but they’ve put in an impressive full grill and rotisserie behind the counter and added some beautiful Puebla-style decor. It was busy when I stopped in mid-day on a Wednesday so I guess the word is out.

It was kind of fun trying to see how much food we could sample for $25. My total came to $25.42 and they were so nice and said not to worry about the change. I dropped the full $5 I brought for a tip into their jar.

So what did I order?

My son and I picked their Signature Burrito. You get two mini burritos so they are perfect for splitting. The flour tortillas are filled with rice, pinto beans, crema, and cheese and we opted for Asada as our meat. It came with shredded lettuce and tomatoes on the side so I unrolled mine and added them. They were delicious and by far my favorite item I tried.

We picked a couple of tacos from their Street Taco menu. I love fish tacos if you don’t know so we ordered a halibut taco. It came with a beautiful piece of halibut I watched them carefully grill. The taco didn’t have the usual tangy sauce or sweet salsa that sometimes comes on fish tacos, but it was excellent and something I will order again. We also ordered a veggie taco that had beans, jalapeno, grilled onions, cabbage. It also had flor de calabaza which I’ve never had and needed to look up. It is squash blossoms and dang they were so good and gave the taco a huge pop of flavor.

We also tried a sope with refried beans, lettuce, pickled onions, crema, queso fresco and carnitas. The toppings were delicious but I didn’t get the full corn tortilla flavor I was expecting. Or maybe in comparison to the other items we tried, the sope just wasn’t very exciting.

I should mention how fresh the tortillas and everything else tasted. It’s clear they take pride in their ingredients. I saw them baking their own tortilla chips instead of using premade ones. Their website has a great story about the three sisters from Puebla who run the restaurant and use traditional family recipes.

I noticed that the in-store menu and online order form are a little different. I was planning to get a horchata but it wasn’t on the posted in-store menu. After I ordered I noticed there was some tucked into a dispenser in the corner. So if there’s something specific you are looking for, I’d ask. Also, I was so busy looking at the grill and decor that I missed the housemade salsa bar. Darn, I guess I’ll need to leave town again.
