How did you first get started in your craft?
I have been artistic my whole life, I majored in Photography, then switched to Wildlife Science. In the last 10 years, I have found a way to combine both my passions.
Favorite Artist(s) and/or Inspirations?
As a native to the Pacific Northwest, I am inspired to paint the beauty of the wilderness and wildlife of the PNW. My love of color and the joy I feel in the natural world is reflected in my artwork. I love living near the mountains and the ocean. As a native of Seattle, both the lush mountains and the beautiful placid Puget Sound have been a constant in my life.
Favorite Piece You've Created?
Every time I create something new, it becomes my favorite! I am currently working on a series of watercolor bird feathers that are accurate specimens. My love of research and accuracy has combined with making something beautiful and I am enjoying the process very much. I enjoy doing portraits for this same reason.
What’s the most challenging part of being an artist, or something you had to overcome?
Being an artist and putting your art out into the world is a very vulnerable process, as the art you create can be very personal. When I first started painting again, calling myself an artist was very difficult, but it got easier with every piece that I created that I was proud of. Now as an artist I struggle with finding a good work/home balance, as I can get very wrapped up in a project and forget that I have other things on my to-do list for the day.
How can people be supportive of the arts?
I think the most supportive thing you can do for any type of artist is to purchase an art print, go to a show or buy their music. Whenever I find an artist I enjoy, I always try to purchase something, either big or small, depending on my budget. I have cards and books, art prints, and music from my favorite artist, and they never fail to make me happy.
Favorite place in Everett to eat?
Due to a restricted diet, I don't eat out much, but I was pretty excited to see a Mod Pizza open up (with a drive-through). I enjoy their salads very much!
Favorite place in Everett to hang?
I love hanging out at Forest Park and going down to the beach at Howarth Park.
Favorite quote and/or words to live by?
Pay attention to the little things. They’re more important than you think. – Matt Gutierrez
What's next for you?
I'm currently focusing on growing my inventory in my shops, expanding my feather collection, and I'm looking to present my card collection to local stores soon. I've been busy working on design work for clients, painting, and working on portrait work this holiday season
