How did you first get started in your craft?

I used to draw as a kid all the time, but never really picked up paints until one day at a friend’s house when I was 18. I had no idea what I was doing, but I felt alive and somehow what I made looked pretty good.

From there I just painted occasionally for fun, borrowing my friend's supplies when she would let me. A teacher and mentor of mine saw my work and encouraged me to pursue it seriously. I laughed. About four years passed by and I finally decided to take art seriously and pour some more energy into it. His words, as well as my husband's, gave me the courage to do so.

Favorite Artist(s) and/or Inspirations?

My favorite artist and inspiration is Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. He is a Japanese watercolor, postercolor, and gouache artist who has written, directed, produced and illustrated beautiful films for many years. His artwork and use of color has inspired my own style so much.

Another artist I look up to is Emily Jeffords, an oil painter and art boss.

What’s the most challenging part of being an artist, or something you had to overcome?

Definitely taking that initial leap and beginning to call myself an "artist". It wasn't until recently that I started feeling confident introducing myself as a professional artist to others.

The second most difficult thing for me has been the social media pressure that can hang over the arts culture. Art can take so long to make, but is so quickly consumed. I've felt the pressure to share something new every day, but sometimes I'll be working on a piece for weeks!

How can people be supportive of the arts?

I think the best way to support the arts is by treating them like you would a local business that you love! A common misconception is that artists do not operate like a business and that they don't need as much support, in reality, the arts need our support just as much.

When you love a small business normally you support them by buying something from them, telling your friends about them, or engaging with them in the community.

Favorite place in Everett to eat?

El Taco Maestro, Katana Sushi, or my kitchen (we love to cook).

Favorite place in Everett to hang?

Anywhere by the water, Narrative Coffee, and Nadines Coffee House.

Favorite quote and/or words to live by?

This changes for me all the time, but at the moment it is:

"Little by little, time goes by -

short if you sing it, long if you sigh."

What's next for you?

I'm currently working on building a website for my art and creating collections of my work, as well as offering prints. I also hope to start filming my art process soon!
