The Everett Art Walk: A Monthly Showcase for Local Artists

Having never attended an Everett Art Walk, I was not sure what to expect when we headed downtown for the December event. I had a vague and uninformed idea that the art would all be the same theme. I couldn’t have been more wrong! I love all kinds of art and during the walk I discovered almost a dozen artists who were new to me and more importantly: local to me.

With the super helpful interactive map from the Everett Art Walk’s website loaded on my mobile browser, we headed out. Here’s how the night went:

We started at Port Gardner Bay Winery where Christopher Doll displayed his otherworldly space and science fiction paintings, William Kline shared his whimsical leatherwork that supports the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and Kathy Lynott hung her mysterious and ethereal paintings. The winery also hosted an open mic that evening. We were greeted (and growled at) by Popcorn, the resident dog, who eventually forgave us for being new. Along with many different varieties of wine, the winery had small plates available for purchase.

The next stop was the Artspace Everett Lofts where Nicole Selene offered some “Trees and Feathery Things”, Nancy Thacker shared “Mandala Madness” with her dot mandalas, and where Ru Otto was reciting her powerful poetry and showing off her acrylic paintings. A small, tight-knit group of individuals gathered together to share their love of art, this was a very intimate environment and experience.

Third stop was in the same building as Artspace: the Shack Art Center. If you’ve ever visited Shack, you know it is home to a number of different artists. The gift shop is filled with art, textiles, and trinkets to fit every budget and the gallery floor is reserved for the larger displays of incredible pieces. Don’t forget to head upstairs! I love visiting Shack because of the rotating displays: there’s always something new to fall in love with, or something to spark your own imagination.

Next on the walking tour was a place I was not familiar with: Zamarama Gallery. Zamarama was hosting the 4th Annual Wood Artisans Show with intricate and beautiful wood workings from Tony Saad and Andrew Nicholls. I am familiar with Tony Saad’s works and own a few of his gorgeous hand-carved dry ingredient spoons and scoops but it was really cool to see more of his work. Upper Left Records was also in attendance with a pop-up record store. This venue was very compact and welcoming with an earthy and elemental vibe.

Almost towards the end of our tour was Lucky Dime and their Three Dog Night show, featuring artistic works by Beau Van Greener, Dalton Grim, and Zac Boetes, with a live DJ set by Left Hand. Lucky Dime is a beer bar, music venue, and art gallery that is all ages, dog friendly and encourages you to bring your own snacks. The music was loud, the crowd was buoyant and while the art installation was on the smaller side, it matched the energy of the venue: raw, independent, and modern.

Last but definitely not least was the Black Lab Gallery, featuring Matt Wilkinson and his book release and art opening of The Metamorphosis of Persephone. We strolled through both levels of the Black Lab Gallery before Good Job. the band opened at 8 p.m. Black Lab Gallery is a visual, performance, and literary arts venue. It has a full bar and boasts a speakeasy vibe: casual, dark, and intimate.

The Everett Art Walk is a monthly showcase for local artists that happens on the 3rd Thursday of every month. It is a free event between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Pay attention to the individual venue times and schedules though, some venues might have slightly different hours and some venues might be hosting a live band that requires a cover charge. In that case, I suggest showing up before the show starts to be sure to see the art on display. Oh, and be sure to wear your good walking shoes if you plan to hit all the spots.
